Dad didnât say anything when he met us in the lobby. We just walked out the doors without saying goodbyeâeven to the security guard at the reception desk. It was weird leaving the school when everyone was still inside. I wondered what Miles and Henry would think when I didnât come back to class. I hated that I was going to miss PE that afternoon.
My parents were quiet the whole way back to the house. We live on the Upper West Side, which is about a half-hour drive from Beecher Prep, but it felt like it took forever to get home.
âI canât believe I got suspended,â I said, just as we pulled into the parking garage in our building.
âItâs not your fault, honey,â answered Mom. âThey have it in for us.â
âMelissa!â Dad yelled, which surprised Mom a bit. âYes, of course itâs his fault. This whole situation is his fault! Julian, what the heck were you thinking, writing notes like that?â
âHe was goaded into writing them!â answered Mom.
We had pulled to a stop inside the garage. The parking-garage attendant was waiting for us to get out of the car, but we didnât get out.
Dad turned around and looked at me. âIâm not saying I think the school handled this right,â he said. âTwo weeksâ suspension is ridiculous. But, Julian, you should know better!â
âI know!â I said. âIt was a mistake, Dad!â
âWe all make mistakes,â said Mom.
Dad turned back around. He looked at Mom. âJansenâs right, Melissa. If you keep trying to justify his actionsââ
âThatâs not what Iâm doing, Jules.â
Dad didnât answer right away. Then he said, âI told Jansen that weâre pulling Julian out of Beecher Prep next year.â
Mom was literally speechless. It took a second for what he said to hit me. âYou what?â I said.
âJules,â Mom said slowly.
âI told Jansen that weâll finish out this year at Beecher Prep,â Dad continued calmly. âBut next year, Julianâs going to a different school.â
âI canât believe this!â I cried. âI love Beecher Prep, Dad! I have friends! Mom!â
âIâm not sending you back to that school, Julian,â Dad said firmly. âNo way am I spending another dime on that school. There are plenty of other great private schools in New York City.â
âMom!â I said.
Mom wiped her hand across her face. She shook her head. âDonât you think we should have talked about this first?â she said to Dad.
âYou donât agree?â he countered.
She rubbed her forehead with her fingers.
âNo, I do agree,â she said softly, nodding.
âMom!â I screamed.
She turned around in her seat. âHoney, I think Daddyâs right.â
âI canât believe this!â I yelled, punching the car seat.
âThey have it in for us now,â she continued. âBecause we complained about the situation with that boy â¦â
âBut that was your fault!â I said through clenched teeth. âI didnât tell you to try and get Auggie thrown out of the school. I didnât want you to get Tushman fired. That was you!â
âAnd Iâm sorry about that, sweetheart,â she said meekly.
âJulian!â said Dad. âYour mom did everything she did to try and protect you.
